7 top tips for keeping your Blu-ray discs alive
Hands up who sometimes does not put their discs back in their cases? Or leaves them in sunlight? Now that Blu-ray has officially won the historical HD disc format wars of 2008, we decided to pester one of the top Media producers, Traxdata, to see what can be done to stop your Blu-ray discs from heading to the mug coaster graveyard. Jacob van der Hoeven kindly provided us with the following top tips for keeping your media in great shape.
Always handle the disc by the outer edges and the centre hub area in order to prevent scratches, fingerprints, dirt or dust on the recording side and avoid bending the dis
Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, excessive heat and/or humidity, as it can damage the disc. They should be stored between -5 degrees Celsius and +30 degrees Celsius.
Never touch the recording surface or place it down on a hard surface in order to protect it from scratches.
Wipe off dust, fingerprints or dirt by using a soft and dry piece of lint-free cloth and always wipe from the centre to the outer edges. However be careful to never wipe in a circular motion.
Only use a soft-tipped pen to write on the printed side of the disc. Do not use pens with hard-tips such as ballpoints.
In order to personalise discs we would advise using Inkjet printable media and to also be careful when using adhesive labels. When using these labels, only use labels with adhesive materials that are designed not to corrode the reflecting layer of the disc and make sure that they are properly applied. Labels applied off-centre or with creases will harm your hardware. Inkjet printable media will not have this problem.
Preferably store the disc in a case in order to avoid scratches on the recording surface and to keep it away from direct sunlight.
